Google Wins In The Java Fight With Oracle, But Expect An Appeal.

1 minute read
Oracle and Google have had this fight since like forever, the bone of contention? Oracle is seeking $9 billion in damage from Google for using a modified version of Java owned by Oracle to develop Android. But yesterday, the court ruled in favor of Google. The Jury found Android to be accessing Java APIs under a fair use provision in copyright law.

In an email to Ars Technica, a Google lawyer had the following to say:
Today’s verdict that Android makes fair use of Java APIs represents a win for the Android ecosystem, for the Java programming community, and for software developers who rely on open and free programming languages to build innovative consumer products.
But Oracle is still now letting the matter go. According to them:
We strongly believe that Google developed Android by illegally copying core Java technology to rush into the mobile device market. Oracle brought this lawsuit to put a stop to Google’s illegal behavior. We believe there are numerous grounds for appeal and we plan to bring this case back to the Federal Circuit on appeal.
Although the trial is over, expect an appeal by Oracle.
If only Oracle would devote as much time, attention, and resources to producing innovative products.
