We Attacked Catholic Church because they were disturbing us with their Music – Suspect

One of the suspects in the July 15th attack on St. Philip’s Catholic Parish, Baki Iku, close to Zuma Rock in Niger State has said that they destroyed properties because some female members of the church were disturbing the Juma’at prayer going on opposite the church with their loud music.

“We went to the church to teach them a bitter lesson so that they will never disturb the peace of the mosque again, especially on a Friday when we are having a prayer. They have the whole of Sunday to themselves and we have never disturbed them from doing their own programmes.
We all entered the church and vandalised some of their property, while we took some of their musical instruments and other valuables. I went for two of the microphones with the aim of selling them, but I was not lucky as I was caught with them,” Usman stated.
He added that the members of the church, on sighting them fled, leaving only the security officer who they beat up.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bala Elkana while parading the suspect said that the youths intended to steal from the church.
He added that Usman had no fixed address and is a scavenger of scraps on refuse dumps in the area.
